Two sub-groups have been formed under the Education Commission's (EC) Working Group on Pre-primary and Basic Education to examine issues related respectively to pre-primary and special education; and basic education to facilitate the review of the academic structure. The two sub-groups comprise the following members:

At its meeting today (Monday), EC also discussed the progress of work of the Preparatory Committee on the Establishment of General Teaching Council (GTC), and the broad issues relating to the setting up of the GTC. The Preparatory Committee is drafting a document for public consultation, which will take place in September 1998.

The meeting was also briefed on the views of the Education Department on the Board of Education Report on Review of 9-year Compulsory Education, and the progress of the Quality Education Fund Steering Committee.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman, Mr Antony Leung said, "This is the 200th EC meeting and the last meeting before the expiry of the current terms of office of Members on June 30, 1998. I would like to express my appreciation for all Members for their valuable contribution to the work of EC throughout the years."
