EC sets up Sub-committee on IT in Education


The following is issued on behalf of the Education Commission:

The Education Commission (EC) discussed at its meeting today (Monday) the checklist on major education initiatives, especially those related to school education.

EC agreed that there was a need to prioritise the various initiatives aimed at providing quality education, and that our education should result in our students enjoying their education, be proficient in both English and Chinese and be creative.

At the meeting, members also noted the vocational education and training strategies adopted by the Vocational Training Council to meet the changing needs of Hong Kong.

The EC has appointed a sub-committee on information technology (IT) in education.

Speaking to the media after the EC meeting today (Monday), the Chairman, Mr Antony Leung said, "The Commission welcome the recent announcement by the Government of the five-year strategy to promote IT in education."

"On the basis of the five-year strategy, a sub-committee will be set up under EC to advise the Commission on the further implementation of IT in education, and the fine-tuning of the strategy in the light of implementation experiences, advances in technology and other new developments," Mr Leung added.

Members of the Sub-committee on IT in Education are appointed for a two-year term with effect from December 1, 1998. The membership of the sub-committee is as follows:

  • Mr Ho Yue-shun is the Principal of King's College.
  • Ms Lai Po-yin is the Senior Teacher of Po Leung Kuk Luk Hing Too Primary AM School.
  • Dr Nancy Law is the Senior Lecturer of the Department of Curriculum Studies, University of Hong Kong. She is also the Director of the Centre for Information Technology in School and Teacher Education, University of Hong Kong.
  • Mr Ng Hok-ling is the Dean of Academic Affairs, Lutheran School for the Deaf. He is also the Council Member of the Hong Kong Association for Computer Education.
  • Dr William Lo is the Chief Executive Officer (Hong Kong), Global Consumer Banking, Citibank. He is also a member of the Board of Education, and the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Quality Assurance Inspection.
  • Mr Norman So is the Principal of Wah Yan College (Kowloon). He is also a member of the Curriculum Development Council.
  • Dr Edward Tse is the Vice President of Booz.Allen & Hamilton Management Consultants.
  • Professor Wong Po-choi is the Associate Professor of the Department of Engineering , Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also a member of the Board of Education.
  • Mr Gabriel Yu is the Chairman of Italade Technology Ventures Limited.
